Welcome to Xavier64!

What is Xavier64?

Xavier64 is a discussion list for members of the Xavier High School Class of 1964. The discussion group was formed because a good number of members had access to Internet Mail. The purpose of Xavier64 is to improve communications among members of the Class in anticipation of our 35th Anniversary Reunion.

How Does Xavier64 Operate?

Xavier64 operates via Internet electronic mail. To join, you send a brief request (called a subscription request) to be added to the mailing list. Once your email address has been added to the list, all messages addressed to members of Xavier64 will be sent to your email address. The discussion list operates by using a mail reflector program to broadcast Xavier64 messages to all subscribers. The mail reflector is maintained and donated by Stefford Computer Consulting, LLC in North Bergen.

Sending and Replying to Xavier64 Messages

If you wish to send a message to everyone on Xavier64, address it to:

Xavier64@listserv.stefford.com

Messages sent to this address will be forwarded to everyone on the list by the mail reflector. Simple, right? Please try to keep these two addresses straight. They have different purposes. The second one is for everyday use in sending messages to everyone on Xavier64. You must be a subscriber to the list in order to send mail to the other members.

Following the simple steps above will allow you to join this fascinating and helpful group of people.

Netiquette

We don't have any hard and fast rules on Xavier64 since we're all friends. Besides, we probably couldn't enforce them anyhow if we did have rules. So, consider the following as friendly suggestions that will enhance everyone's enjoyment of Xavier64.

1. Everyone is welcome. When newcomers "arrive" on the list, make them feel at home by responding to their introductions. If you state an opinion(especially about controversial subjects), a little tact and sensitivity to folks who don't share your views will be appreciated. Try to avoid slang expressions and acronyms that may not be well understood and take a moment to explain yourself clearly.

2. Subject headings can (should) be useful. Take care that the subject lines in your messages reflect the message content. And, if you have more than one main topic, use separate messages, instead of one (with appropriate subject lines) wherever possible. Avoid that noxious Net disease known as "Thread Drift."

3. Lurkers, come out of your virtual closets. Many of us just don't know each other as well as we could, or should. Do take a minute or two to post an introduction, tell us about what you've been doing for the last 35 years (briefly) your hobbies, pet peeves and anything else that comes to mind. We want to get to know more about each of you - really!

4. When replying to an Xavier64 message (i.e., one to everyone on the list), it is not necessary to send a copy to the original author. When this is done, the original author receives two copies of the message - one from you and another from the mail reflector. There seems to be no speed advantage to this. Messages which I've posted to the list generally come back to me via the reflector within about ten minutes.

5. Talk about us! The limited group we've started with is probably just the "tip of the iceberg" of Class of 1964 members who have E-mail access. The more, the merrier.

BTW, anyone who posts messages to Xavier64 will notice that the reflector sends you an acknowledgement of your message. While the returned messages do add to the clutter in one's Inbox, it is a comforting sign that the messages have been broadcast as intended.

Generally, copies (usually, "cc:" or "Copy To:") should be limited to people who are *not* on the Xavier64 mailing list. BTW, if the original author has copied someone, it's probably not necessary to copy that person with the reply - let the author of the original message take care of that.

A good practice might be to indicate in the first few lines of your message body the name of the person to whom you are replying and to quote a few, pertinent lines of the original message. This will help everyone follow the thread of the conversation.

I hope this helps everyone reap the full benefit of Xavier64. If you have suggestions, revisions or comments for a future revision of the FAQ, please send them to me at: JJMSR@LSFCU.ORG
