As part of the requirements for earning the Eagle Scout Award in the Boy Scouts of America, a scout must develop and implement a substantial project which is of service to the community. While a Life Scout, he must plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to his religious institution, school, or his community. (The project should benefit an organization other than the BSA.) The project idea must be approved by the organization benefiting from the effort, his unit leader (Scoutmaster, Varsity Scout Coach, Venturing crew Advisor), unit committee, and by the council or district advancement committee. As my project, I have chosen to collect and distribute used books to disadvantaged children. I call my project "Read Me Again, Please!"
The MissionThe goal of "Read Me Again, Please!" is to collect five-hundred used children's books from members of the community and recycle them into the hands of disadvantaged children who otherwise might not have the opportunity to develop a love and appreciation of books. The books will be collected from late November of 2002 until mid January of 2003.
Why Recycle Children's Books? Many families have children’s’ books which their children have outgrown and which could be put to good use by children whose families cannot afford to buy books for them. Many of the children in day care programs come from families that cannot afford to buy books. Because of this, many of these children are not exposed to books at an early age and therefore have more trouble in school later in life and find it difficult to keep up with their more fortunate classmates. By providing the books to the daycare center, the children will have access to the books and will have the opportunity to develop the same skills as their peers.
Contact InformationIf you have books to donate, or would like to help with this project in some other way, I can be contacted through one of the means listed below. Note: All of the means of communication listed below are directed through an adult assisting with the project. Any inappropriate contacts will be reported to the proper authorities.
