Denner - I don't remember a
lot of specifics about my Cub Scout years, but I do remember being the Denner for my Den.
The Denner is the youth leader of a Den or group of six to ten
boys who work together under a Den Leader. In England and some other countries, this
position is known as a "Sixer." By the way, when I was in Cubs in the
50's, we didn't have "Den Leaders," we had "Den Mothers". |
 |
Den Chief - After becoming
a member of the Boy Scout troop, I served as a Den Chief for a number of years beginning
in 1957. The Den Chief is a Boy Scout who assists the Den Leader in working with
the Cub Scout Den. |
 |
Patrol Leader - I served as
the first Patrol Leader of the Flaming Arrow patrol of Troop 75 in 1959. According to an
old Patrol Record booklet I found, the members of the patrol were: Jim Miller - Patrol
leader, Eugene Young - Assistant Patrol Leader, Vincent Scalese - Patrol Scribe, Richard
Hartnett, Michael Terry, Charles Winterhalter, Donald Gruccio, John Grimaldi, and Joseph
Iannaconi. |
 |
Post Secretary - In 1960, I
transferred from Troop 75 to Explorer Post 75. Sometime thereafter, I served as Post
Secretary. |
 |
Post Vice President -
I served in this position for a while also. |
 |
Post President - I was elected
as Post Presidentabout the beginning of 1962. |
 |
I also became Explorer
Cabinet Representative at about the same time. |
 |
Council Explorer Cabinet President
- I served in this position in Hudson Council for two years from the Fall of 1962 until
the Spring of 1964. |
 |
In 1964, I served as Junior
Assistant Scoutmaster for the National Jamboree Troop # 62 from Hudson Council in
Jersey City, New Jersey. |
 |
Upon entering college in the Fall of
1964, I became inactive in Scouting per se, but immediately became active at Saint Peter's
College in an effort to charter a chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, the National Service
Fraternity sponsored, at that time, by the Boy Scouts of America. I became the Historian
of the petitioning group, and later Second Vice President - of the Omicron Sigma
Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega. |
|
Beginning in 1968 I began a twelve
year hiatus from scouting while I went to graduate school, established a family, and began
my career. One day in 1980, the Council Executive of Hudson Hamilton Council, B.S.A.
(Hudson had merged with Alexander Hamilton Council in 1969) tapped me on the shoulder at a
Rotary meeting and said "You're an Eagle Scout aren't you?" You can guess
what came next. |
 |
Council Executive Board Member
- I served in a number of capacities over the years as a member of the Council Executive
Board. (The executive who recruited me left for another council, by the way, less then a
month after getting me on the board. My first official function on the Board was to
attend his farewell dinner.) |
 |
Post Committee Chairman -
While serving on the Council Executive Board, I also became Chairman of the local chapter
of the American Red Cross, and naturally started an Explorer Post there. I somehow became
Post Committee Chairman there. |
 |
Council Vice President - I
served a number of times as a Council Vice President - for Membership, for
Exploring, and for Finance. |
 |
Council Commissioner - I also
served for three years as Council Commissioner for Hudson Hamilton Council. |
 |
Council President - of Hudson
Liberty Council (Hudson Hamilton was merged with Bayonne Council in the interim), a
position in which I served for the years 1995 and 1996. |
|
I also served for a number of years
as National Council Representative for Hudson Hamilton and later, Hudson
Liberty Councils. |
 |
When my youngest son entered first
grade in 1993, I became a Tiger Cub Partner and started my affiliation with Pack
305 in Kearny, New Jersey - still the same council as many years ago, just a new name and
a broader territory. |
 |
Tiger Cub Group Coach - I
served in this position for the pack for a period of two years while my son went through
Wolf and Bear. |
 |
During this time, one of our former
OA Lodge Chiefs who I had gotten to know fairly well when he served on the Council
Executive Board, entered Saint Peter's College, which I had attended. He wanted to
revive the by now defunct chapter of Alpha Phi Omega. I became Community
Advisor to the petitioning group and became a Re-charter Member of the Chapter
when they were readmitted as Omicron Sigma. |
 |
Meanwhile, I became Council
Past President and remained on the Executive Board of the council. |
 |
When my youngest son was ready to
enter Webelos, there was no den leader available for his group, so I became Webelos Den
Leader - and served in that position for a period of two years. |
 |
When my son crossed over into Boy Scouts,
naturally, so did I and became a member of the Troop Committee of Troop
305. My older son meanwhile, an Eagle Scout himself, was serving as
Assistant Scoutmaster to the troop, and became the Assistant scoutmaster for the new scout
patrol. |
 |
I shortly thereafter became Troop
Committee Chairman. |
 |
During this period, I also became a member
of the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Archdiocese of Newark. |
 |
Meanwhile we've just had another
council merger, and in addition to being a member of the Council Executive Board
for the new Northern New Jersey Council (soon to be given a better name I hope), I am also
serving on the interim Council Camping Committee. |
 |
I'm also serving as a District
Member-at-Large - for the (also soon to be renamed) Hudson Liberty District (used to
be Hudson Liberty Council). |
 |
I was recently appointed to serve as
International Representative for the Northern New Jersey Council of the Boy Scouts of
America. In this position, I am responsible for promoting the international programs of
the Boy Scouts of America and creating access to and awareness of the many international
opportunities available to the youth enrolled in the Scouting programs in the Northern New
Jersey Council. |
