Scouting Experiences

Through my participation in Scouting over the years, I have had numerous wonderful opportunities for very special, if not peak, experiences.  Here's a sampling:

57RHSR.gif (167399 bytes) Rock Hill Scout Reservation - From the summer of 1957 to 1963, I managed to spend a couple of weeks each year at the camp which was operated by Hudson Council, B.S.A.  The camp was only two years old when I started going there having been opened for the first time in 1955.  I remember a lot of great experiences swimming, boating, horseback riding, and just enjoying the freedom of being away from home and parents for two glorious weeks each summer.  It was a great experience and every boy and girl ought to have that opportunity.
60njpp.gif (77597 bytes) The 1960 National Jamboree celebrating 50 years of Scouting in the United States was held in Colorado Springs, Colorado in the shadow of Pike's Peak.   I participated as a scout in the Hudson Council contingent.  We traveled across country by a special train filled with scouts going to the Jamboree. We toured extensively, and visited many great sites in Colorado and New Mexico.
Philmont_Jubilee_1960.gif (39937 bytes) Philmont. - Now there's a place every scout should get to at least once.  I got there as part of our post-Jamboree tour.  That's right, we did a trek on our way home from the Jamboree.   Philmont was great.  I only wish I could have been a little older when I could have appreciated it even more.
1963_Region2ExpConf.gif (183320 bytes) In 1963, I was selected to participate in the Region Two Explorer Delegate Conference at Syracuse University.  We traveled to Syracuse by bus and stayed in the dorms.  During the conference, we received a lot of great leadership training, and were given the opportunity to have input into the development of the Explorer program..
64wf_pp.gif (47928 bytes) During the first week of July of 1964, I was a member of the  New York World's Fair Scout Service Corps. For more on this experience, take a look at my Scouting at the World's Fair website.
64nj_embr_pp_2.gif (96611 bytes) 1964 National Jamboree - I attended this Jamboree as a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster for Jamboree Troop # 62 with the Hudson Council  contingent.  It was a very different experience from 1960, being four years older and with the responsibilities of leadership required by the position.
schiff_pp.gif (58480 bytes) In college, I participated in National Leadership Training for Alpha Phi Omega at the Schiff Scout Reservation in Mendham, New Jersey during the mid to late 60's.
Wbpatch.gif (159989 bytes) Wood Badge - in 19xx I participated in the B.S.A. course known as Wood Badge.  This is an advanced level training program for Scout Leaders.  My course was NE-IV-38 and was held at Rock Hill Scout Reservation.  About eighteen months later I completed my "ticket" or self-learning plan, and received my "beads."
85nj_pp_2.gif (58638 bytes) 1985 National Jamboree - I participated in the 1985  Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill near Fredericksburg, Virginia for the first time as an adult. I served on sub-camp staff as an Assistant Dining Officer (read as "cook"). It was hard work, about 18 hours a day, but it was great.  Our cooking staff prepared three meals a day for 12 days for the sub-camp staff made up of approximately 100 youth and adults.
89nj_pp.gif (25518 bytes) 1989 National Jamboree - In 1989 I went back to Fort A.P. Hill and served once again as a sub-camp cook.
93nj_pp.gif (14734 bytes) 1993 National Jamboree - Yet another reprise of my previous service at the 1985 and 1993 National Jamborees.
97nj_pp.gif (15192 bytes) 1997 National Jamboree - I decided that I needed a change and went looking for a different job at the Jamboree in 1997.  I wound up as Assistant Sub-camp Commissary  Officer supervising one of three crews that distributed food to the units in a sub-camp.  That meant that each night we unloaded and sorted out food for approximately 2500 hungry Jamboree goers.   We worked shifts of twelve hours on and 24 hours off so there was lots of time to see the Jamboree.  The only problem was getting some sleep.  Our sub-camp staff housing area was conveniently located directly across the road from a shotgun range, and the range would open each day at just about the same time we would get off the night shift.  Needless to say, the atmosphere was not conducive to rest and relaxation.   We still had fun though, and the food and supplies did get out to the troops.   It was another great experience.
2000 International Seminar - In 2000 I participated in the International Seminar at the Philmont Training Center in order to be better able to perform my function as Council International Representative.

Here's a picture of my group that I found on the Philmont Training Center website.

2000 National Order of the Arrow Conference - That summer, I also traveled to the University of Tennessee as a member of the Lenapehoking Lodge IX contingent to NOAC.
2001 National Jamboree - In 2001 I participated in my seventh BSA National Jamboree as a member of the Relationships Division Exhibit Staff.  I represented the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians and Rotary International by exhibiting on their behalf.
2002 National Order of the Arrow Conference - In the summer of 2002 I served as the contingent advisor for the Lenapehoking Lodge IX contingent to NOAC at Indiana University.
In December of 2002, I will travel to Thailand to serve as a member of the International Service Team at the 21st World Scout Jamboree.  I am sure that I will have more information to share about my experiences at this event upon my return.
