The New York World's Fair of 1939-40

"Building The World of Tomorrow"

39wf_NY_postcard.gif (87324 bytes)

In April of 1939 the New York World's Fair, "Building The World of Tomorrow," opened on what was once a marshy wasteland in Flushing Meadows, just east of the great metropolis. From its inception to its closing ceremonies, the Fair promoted one of the last great metanarratives of the Machine Age: the unqualified belief in science and technology as a means to economic prosperity and personal freedom. Wedged between the greatest economic disaster in America and the growing international tension that would result in World War II, The World of Tomorrow was a much-needed antidote to the depression and confusion of the times. It provided the one saving grace which all of America needed - it provided hope.

The Boy Scouts of America participated in this celebration by providing a Service Corps for the Fair.   According to a pamphlet called I'm Going to the World's Fair produced by the B.S.A. :

The "WHY" of the SCOUT CAMP

Amid the "seven-league" marvels of a World's Fair, a Scout Camp has been provided to serve four main purposes:
1. To house and care for those groups of Scouts who come to stay a week and render special Scout service to the Fair and its guests.
2. To serve as a Scout educational center which will help each Scout to get a thrill from the stirring wonders of the Fair.
3. To furnish a continuous demonstration of Scouting activities and methods, thus giving to millions of visitors a first-hand idea of what Scouting is and what Scouts do.
4. To provide a place for fun and comradeship among fine fellows from all parts of the country.

Each Scout selected for the privileges of this camp has the opportunity and responsibility:
To Live as Scouts at their best
To Serve in the Scout tradition
To Learn from marvelous exhibits
To Represent Scouting worthily.

And in the myriad contacts with people, to radiate that fine consideration and brotherliness without which democracy is impossible.

Scout Knife

This item was described by the seller as:

The back [of] this knife says: NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR. I know it is from the 1939 World's Fair because it came in a box from the collection of Photos and memorabilia from Mr. Leo Casey, Director of Publicity for the fair. This knife has obviously been used and is worn from use. The Symbol of the fair is embossed or "carved" in the handle and the words are printed and are quite worn. It measures 3 3/4" Long. It has a blade, a screwdriver, a file and a sharpener. Quite a nice collector piece.
