The Golden Gate
International Exposition
San Francisco 1939-40
The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (Bay Bridge) opened on November 12, 1936. The Golden Gate Bridge opened on May 28, 1937. The Golden Gate International Exposition celebrated the construction of the Bay area's two magnificent bridges. Treasure Island, the site of the exposition, is literally in San Francisco Bay and at the mid-point of the Bay Bridge. To get to Golden Gate International Exposition, you had to use the Bay Bridge or ride a ferry. Built of bay dredged dirt, Treasure Island was to be an international airport after the Golden Gate International Exposition. World War II came, the Navy took over Treasure Island and San Francisco was given land where San Francisco International Airport (SFO) now stands. The Golden Gate International Exposition had two runs. The 1939 session ran from February 18 through October 29. A 1940 session was questionable due to financial problems. Fortunately, the Golden Gate International Exposition did open in 1940. Its run was much shorter to take maximum benefit of the warm summer months. It opened on May 25 and closed for the last time ever on September 29, 1940.
