HLCNet

HLCNet is an internet mailing list for dicussions of District Activities, information, and general chit-chat about what's going on in Hudson Liberty District.

The listowner will review all subscription requests before approving anyone wishing to subscribe to HLCNet. Because this is a Scouting list that does involve young men, please understand that the utmost care will be taken in screening those who may wish to join. If there are any questions, you will receive Email asking for your registration information - Unit and City. If necessary, such information may be confirmed with the Council Registrar prior to admission to this forum. This is a privately maintained list and all decisions of the listowner ( jim@stefford.com ) are final.

Welcome to HLCNET!

What is HLCNet?

HLCNet is a discussion list for Scouts and Scouters in Hudson Liberty Council's Scouting programs. The discussion group was formed because a good number of concerned members had access to Internet Mail. The purpose of HLCNet is to exchange new ideas, discuss concerns about Council Operations, improve communications among members of the Council, and provide an open forum to come up with new solutions or improvements to our program.

How Does HLCNet Operate?

HLCNet operates via Internet electronic mail. To join, you send a brief request (called a subscription request) to be added to the mailing list. Once your email address has been added to the list, all messages addressed to members of HLCNet will be sent to your email address. The discussion list operates by using a mail reflector program to broadcast HLCNet messages to all subscribers. The mail reflector is maintained and donated by Stefford Computer Consulting, LLC in North Bergen.

HLCNet Subscription Information

To subscribe to the HLCNet mailing list send your request via email. A real name is mandatory for admission to this list.

A Subject line is not necessary. The body of the message should say:

SUBSCRIBE HLCNET real name

It should look like this: SUBSCRIBE HLCNET John Q. Scoutmaster

Send his message to:

listserv@listserv.stefford.com

There is a listing of commands at the end of this page.

Sending and Replying to HLCNet Messages

If you wish to send a message to everyone on HLCNet, address it to:

hlcnet@listserv.stefford.com

Messages sent to this address will be forwarded to everyone on the list by the mail reflector. Simple, right? Please try to keep these two addresses straight. They have different purposes. The second one is for everyday use in sending messages to everyone on HLCNet. You must be a subscriber to the list in order to send mail to the other members.

Following the simple steps above will allow you to join this fascinating and helpful group of people.

Netiquette

We don't have any hard and fast rules on HLCNet since we're all friends. Besides, we probably couldn't enforce them anyhow if we did have rules. So, consider the following as friendly suggestions that will enhance everyone's enjoyment of HLCNet.

1. Everyone is welcome. When newcomers "arrive" on the list, make them feel at home by responding to their introductions. If you state an opinion(especially about controversial subjects), a little tact and sensitivity to folks who don't share your views will be appreciated. Try to avoid slang expressions and acronyms (I learned that in Woodbadge!) that may not be well understood and take a moment to explain yourself clearly.

2. Subject headings can (should) be useful. Take care that the subject lines in your messages reflect the message content. And, if you have more than one main topic, use separate messages, instead of one (with appropriate subject lines) wherever possible. Avoid that noxious Net disease known as "Thread Drift."

3. Lurkers, come out of your virtual closets. Many of us just don't know each other as well as we could, or should. Do take a minute or two to post an introduction, tell us about your Scouting background, hobbies, pet peeves and anything else that comes to mind. We want to get to know each of you - really! Tell us what you like and don't like about the District. Together, we'll change what can be changed and, if it can't be changed, we'll commiserate with you.

4. When replying to an HLCNet message (i.e., one to everyone on the list), it is not necessary to send a copy to the original author. When this is done, the original author receives two copies of the message - one from you and another from the mail reflector. There seems to be no speed advantage to this. Messages which I've posted to the list generally come back to me via the reflector within about ten minutes.

5. Talk about us! The limited group we've started with is probably just the "tip of the iceberg" of Council Scouts and Scouters who have E-mail access. The more, the merrier.

BTW, anyone who posts messages to HLCNet will notice that the reflector sends you an acknowledgement of your message. While the returned messages do add to the clutter in one's Inbox, it is a comforting sign that the messages have been broadcast as intended.

Generally, copies (usually, "cc:" or "Copy To:") should be limited to people who are *not* on the HLCNet mailing list. BTW, if the original author has copied someone, it's probably not necessary to copy that person with the reply - let the author of the original message take care of that.

A good practice might be to indicate in the first few lines of your message body the name of the person to whom you are replying and to quote a few, pertinent lines of the original message. This will help everyone follow the thread of the conversation.

I hope this helps everyone reap the full benefit of HLCNet. If you have suggestions, revisions or comments for a future revision of the FAQ, please send them to me at: jim@stefford.com
